How to Adjust a Toilet Float (All 4 Float Types, 5-Minute Fix)

How to adjust a toilet float depends on which of the four float types is in your tank: ball-cock arm, cup float on a vertical rod, internal float inside a tower valve, or modern integrated tower float. This guide shows the adjustment screw for each one, the water level it sets, and how to test it after a turn. Most adjustments take under 5 minutes once you know which float you’re looking at. How to adjust a toilet float by type

Identify your float first, then adjust

The most-skipped step is matching the adjustment method to the float type. Lift the tank lid and look inside. Brass arm with a plastic ball means ball-and-arm; bend the arm. Plastic cup riding a vertical valve means cup-on-valve; squeeze the clip and slide. No visible float means in-tank floatless; the adjuster is a Phillips screw on top of the valve. Correct water level is 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube; most manufacturers mark this line on the tube. Five minutes, no tools or one flat-head screwdriver.

Why this matters:

  • Water too low = weak flush, double-flushing, streaks in the bowl
  • Water too high = constant running, water spilling into the overflow tube, $10-$30 a month wasted

What you’ll need {#what-you-need}

Most adjustments need nothing. A few need one tool.

  • Flat-head screwdriver (cup-float adjustment screws)
  • Phillips screwdriver (in-tank floatless valves)
  • A folded towel (the ceramic tank lid chips easily; never set it on hard tile)
  • Optional: replacement fill valve if yours is waterlogged or cracked. The universal Fluidmaster 400A fits 95% of North American toilets

You do not need to drain the tank for a float adjustment. You do need to shut off the supply (Step 1).


The 4 types of toilet floats {#float-types}

Knowing which float you have is half the job. Here are the four you’ll encounter in any North American home.

1. Ball-and-arm (old style)

A brass rod connected to a hollow plastic or copper ball floating on the surface. Common in homes built before about 1995. The ball screws onto the arm; the arm pivots on a “ballcock” valve at the side of the tank.

Adjustment: Bend the arm down to lower water, up to raise it. Newer ball-and-arm models have a small screw on top of the ballcock. Clockwise lowers, counterclockwise raises.

2. Cup float on a fill valve (Fluidmaster-style)

A vertical plastic fill valve with a doughnut-shaped cup that rides up and down the shaft. This is the modern standard; if your toilet is from 2000 or later, you almost certainly have one.

Adjustment: Pinch the spring clip on the side of the cup and slide it up the metal rod (raises water) or down (lowers). Some newer Fluidmasters use a thumb-turn screw at the top of the valve instead; direction is printed on the cap.

3. In-tank floatless (pressure-balanced)

No visible float. A sealed cylindrical valve sits on the tank bottom and uses a pressure sensor. Common in newer commercial buildings and some American Standard residential models.

Adjustment: Pop the cap off the top of the valve. Underneath is a Phillips adjustment screw. Clockwise lowers, counterclockwise raises.

4. Modern dual-flush pressure-balanced

Newer Kohler, TOTO, and American Standard high-efficiency dual-flush toilets use a combined valve-canister that self-calibrates. They have a float, usually a small cup, but it rarely needs adjustment. If yours misbehaves, the issue is almost always the canister seal, not the float.

Adjustment: Same as cup-on-valve when needed. Check the seal first.


What “correct water level” looks like {#correct-level}

The rule: water sits 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube (the vertical tube in the middle of the tank).

Most overflow tubes have a marking:

  • An etched line reading “Water Line” or “WL”
  • A molded ridge or notch
  • On Kohler tanks, a printed dotted line

No marking? Measure 1 inch down from the top with a ruler. Higher than the tube means water continuously dribbles into the bowl: the constant-running sound. More than 2 inches below the line robs the flush of momentum.

The U.S. EPA’s WaterSense program recommends the manufacturer’s marked line for correct flush volume. Going below it doesn’t save water; it just means you flush twice.


Step 1: Turn off the supply valve {#step-1-supply-off}

Most calls about “my toilet keeps running” trace back to a float adjustment that skipped this step. Adjust under pressure and the second you bump the assembly, water sprays across the tank and out at you.

Reach behind the toilet. You’ll see a small chrome or plastic valve where the supply line meets the wall. Turn it clockwise until snug, or for lever-style quarter-turn valves, rotate the handle 90 degrees so it’s perpendicular to the pipe.

Flush once with the valve closed. The tank drains and won’t refill, and now you can work.

If the valve is corroded or frozen, do not force it. A snapped supply valve floods your bathroom in 90 seconds. Shut the house main off instead and plan to replace the valve as a separate job.


Step 2: Identify your float type {#step-2-identify}

Lift the tank lid carefully; it’s heavier than it looks and chips easily. Set it on a folded towel away from where you’re working.

Match what you see to one of the four types above. If you’re unsure, look for a brand stamp on the fill valve (Fluidmaster, Korky, Kohler Genuine Parts), and that name plus “float adjustment” pulls up the manufacturer’s diagram.


Step 3: Adjusting a ball-and-arm float {#step-3-ball-arm}

Find the small slotted or Phillips screw on top of the ballcock where the arm attaches. If present, that’s your adjuster. Clockwise lowers, counterclockwise raises. Quarter turn at a time.

No screw? Bend the brass arm itself. Grip with both hands close to the ballcock end (never near the ball) and gently flex downward (lowers) or upward (raises). Half-inch changes only. Brass work-hardens and snaps past about 30 degrees from its original shape.

If the ball feels heavy or sloshes, it’s waterlogged. Unscrew it counterclockwise; a replacement is about $5.


Step 4: Adjusting a cup-on-valve float {#step-4-cup}

Find the float cup: the doughnut-shaped ring around the central valve shaft. On the side you’ll see either:

  • A spring-loaded clip on a metal pull-rod: pinch the clip and slide the cup up (raises) or down (lowers)
  • A thumb screw at the top of the valve: direction is printed on the cap; most Fluidmasters use clockwise = raise

Small increments. A quarter inch of cup travel equals roughly half an inch of water level.

If the cup is cracked, scaled, or won’t slide, replace the fill valve. Fluidmaster 400A and Korky 528 are universal, 15-minute installs.


Step 5: Adjusting an in-tank floatless valve {#step-5-floatless}

Pop the cap off the cylindrical valve. Usually pulls straight up, sometimes with a small counterclockwise twist. Underneath is a Phillips adjustment screw.

  • Clockwise lowers the water level
  • Counterclockwise raises it

A half-turn = roughly a quarter inch. Don’t crank past two full turns either way. Beyond that you’re forcing the diaphragm and shortening the valve’s life. Snap the cap back on.


Step 6: Turn the water back on and watch {#step-6-water-on}

Open the supply valve slowly, half a turn at a time. Watch the float (or water surface for floatless valves). It should stop about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. If it stops too low or too high, you need more adjustment.

Don’t put the lid back on yet.


Step 7: Test flush and confirm {#step-7-test}

Flush. Watch for three things:

  1. Tank empties fully
  2. Float drops, then rises with the refill
  3. Fill valve shuts off cleanly at your target line

If the valve hisses after shutting, the level is still slightly too high. Water is creeping into the overflow tube. Lower it a quarter inch and retest.


Step 8: If it’s still wrong, repeat {#step-8-repeat}

Adjustments are iterative; nobody nails it on the first try. Quarter-to-half-inch changes, retest, repeat. Two or three cycles is normal.

Common problems {#common-problems}

“My float won’t go up high enough.” The arm is permanently bent or the ball is waterlogged. Shake the ball. If you hear water, it’s done. Replace the ball, or swap the whole ballcock for a modern fill valve.

“I adjusted the float but the water keeps running.” Not a float problem. You have a leaking flapper or a fill valve seal that won’t close. See our guide to diagnosing a running toilet.

“My new float won’t fit my old fill valve.” Floats and fill valves are matched assemblies. A Fluidmaster cup won’t snap onto a Korky valve. Replace the whole valve: $12 instead of $7 and guaranteed fit.

“Water level keeps changing on its own.” Almost always a slow flapper leak. Drop food coloring in the tank. If color appears in the bowl within 15 minutes without flushing, replace the flapper.


When to replace the float instead of adjusting {#replace-vs-adjust}

Adjust if:

  • Float is intact and the cup or ball slides smoothly
  • Arm or rod is straight
  • You’re moving the level less than 1 inch

Replace if:

  • Ball is waterlogged (heavy, sloshing)
  • Plastic cup is cracked or warped
  • Brass arm has been bent more than once
  • White scale binds the cup to the shaft
  • Valve is older than 10 years; diaphragms wear out

A full fill-valve replacement is $10-$15 and 15-20 minutes. If you’re already in the tank and the parts look tired, replace them now.


FAQ {#faq}

How high should the water be in a toilet tank?

About 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. Most overflow tubes have a marked line; aim for that. Higher means water spills into the tube and the toilet runs continuously; more than 2 inches below weakens the flush.

Why does my toilet run after I flush?

Either the float is set too high and water spills into the overflow tube, or the flapper is leaking and the fill valve is constantly topping the tank back up. Test the flapper first with food coloring before adjusting the float.

Can I just bend the float arm?

Yes, on old brass ball-and-arm assemblies. Half-inch changes, grip close to the ballcock, not near the ball. Brass work-hardens and snaps past about 30 degrees from its original shape. Don’t bend modern plastic float arms; they crack.

What if my toilet has no visible float?

You have an in-tank floatless valve. The adjustment is a Phillips screw under a small cap on top of the central cylinder. Clockwise lowers, counterclockwise raises.

Should I replace the float when I replace the fill valve?

They’re sold as matched assemblies; you can’t really replace one without the other. If the float is bad, swap the whole valve. 15-minute job.

Why does my water level keep changing on its own?

Almost always a slow flapper leak. Drop food coloring in the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, replace the flapper.

Will adjusting the float save water?

Barely. The manufacturer set the volume at the marked water line. Below that line doesn’t save water; the flush is weaker, so you flush twice. Real savings come from replacing a pre-1994 toilet with a 1.28 GPF model.
