Brands

The toilet brands, honestly compared.

Kohler, TOTO, American Standard, Woodbridge, Swiss Madison — what each is actually good at, and where each cuts corners.

About this pillar

The toilet market is more consolidated than it looks.

Five or six brands account for the majority of US sales. They have meaningfully different strengths. TOTO is the engineer’s brand — quietly excellent, slightly boring. Kohler is the designer’s brand — beautiful, expensive, sometimes fussy. American Standard is the contractor’s brand — boring, cheap, reliable. Woodbridge is the Costco shopper’s brand — cheap, surprisingly good, sometimes weird.

These brand guides go deep on each: where it came from, what it makes, what to buy, what to avoid.
